What are these devices and what are they used for?

Sometimes, when it is not feasible to install an elevator, mechanical devices are used inside buildings to move people between different heights.

As a general rule, they are installed in single-family homes where there is no possibility of installing another means of elevation, or where it is complicated or very expensive to install. The stairlifts can be installed inside or outside the staircase and can connect 2 or more floors.

What types of devices are there?

  • Stairlifts for Straight Stairways
  • Stairlifts for Curved Stairways
  • Platform Stairlifts for straight runs
  • Platform Stairlifts for curved runs
  • Vertical Elevators

Vertical Elevator

Short travel lifts are vertical hydraulic platforms, generally with arms or half cab, specially designed for wheelchairs, suitable for travel between 2 levels, with a maximum lifting height of 3 or 4 meters (depending on the model) and a maximum load capacity of 385 kg.

This equipment consists of a 750 W electric motor and a drive system that can be electric or hydraulic, depending on the model, by means of a telescopic cylinder and incorporates a hydraulic power unit with a manual lowering valve, as well as a hydraulic silencer to reduce noise and vibrations.

The electrical operation will always be with constant pulsation, which means that the device only works when the button is pressed.

In Tecnolift Ascensores we have an advisory service so that we can study your situation and help you decide which model of vertical lift best suits your needs, studying the different locations and the possibilities of each space.

We will show you the range of vertical lifts we can offer you.

Stairlift platform

The Platform Stairlift is a structure specially developed to facilitate the access of disabled people and wheelchair users to the different levels of a house, in a safe way and occupying a minimum of space.

This platform is capable of carrying a weight of up to 225 kg, on a slope of 15° to 45°, over adistance of 15 m and with a speed of 0.1 m/s, and is very easy to use, as it is operated by remote control.

When to install a Platform Stairlift?

This type of stair lifts can be easily installed in homes where there is no possibility of installing other means of elevation, and are suitable for both indoors and outdoors.

Stairlifts

Stairlifts are mechanical devices that are used inside a house to facilitate the mobility of people between different heights and are specially developed to carry a seated person, up to a maximum weight of 125 kg.

Its operation is carried out by means of directional switches that offer total control of the chair, and can be operated with simple movements, making it ideal for use by people with limited mobility.

When to install a stairlift?

Stairlifts can be installed in single-family homes where it is not possible to install other means of elevation, either because of the difficulty of assembly or because of high budgets, and are mainly intended for installation on the stairs.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accessibility

The advantages of installing a stairlift are as follows:

  • Speed of installation
  • No additional work is usually required
  • Reduced price, although it increases greatly with the curves and guide meters, becoming more expensive in some cases than an elevator.

The disadvantages of installing a stairlift are as follows:

  • Not useful for carrying loads (shopping, laundry basket, butane gas, etc.).
  • They can break the aesthetics of the house
  • Removal of stairway width
  • A stairlift is not suitable for use by people in wheelchairs or with severe mobility problems.
  • The user is not able to look after himself/herself or it is too expensive for him/her to move from the wheelchair to the stairlift.

The advantages of installing a Vertical Elevator are the following:

  • Speed of installation
  • In some cases, no additional work is required
  • Average price

The disadvantages of installing a Vertical Elevator are the following:

  • It is suitable for lifting loads (shopping, laundry basket, butane gas, etc.).
  • Require more floor space
  • It is suitable for use by people in wheelchairs or with severe mobility problems.
  • The user can fend for himself.

The advantages of installing a platform lift are as follows:

  • Speed of installation
  • No additional work is usually required
  • Average price, although it increases greatly with curves and meters of guideway, becoming more expensive in some cases than an elevator.

The disadvantages of installing a platform lift are as follows:

  • They can break the aesthetics of the house
  • Removal of stairway width
  • For 2 or more floors the price approaches or exceeds that of an elevator.

The price of a chair and platform stairlift will depend mainly on the number of meters of guide, whether it is for indoor or outdoor use and the curves or turns they have.

There are cheaper stairlifts on the market, which are reconditioned, but the price difference is usually not worth it. You can also find chairs stairlifts used or second hand, but in curved sections is almost impossible to be adapted. In straight sections it is easier as long as the length you need is equal or less.
